Something of great note happened way back on episode 2 of *Survivor 50*: Christian Hubicki fell flat on his face. Well, that was not the thing of great note in itself. It was more *why* Christian intentionally flopped like he was rehearsing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It was to create a distraction so his partner in *Star Trek* crime, Rick Devens, could hide a fake immunity idol at Tribal Council.

CLEVER! SNEAKY! But was it legal? Jeff Probst just stood there and let it happen, so it certainly appeared so. The reason the legality was in question in the first place is due to something Probst told me back in 2020 after Adam Klein almost destroyed the host’s Tribal Council podium trying to rip off a fleur-de-lis symbol he thought was an immunity idol hidden in plain sight.

I asked Probst then how far he would have let Adam go before stopping him, and the host answered as follows: “Your question speaks to why we have never put an idol at Tribal Council. For the fear of players destroying Tribal Council! So, in that sense, I would not have let him start to tear down Tribal Council.”

Probst left no doubt back in 2020 as he continued: “To be very clear, we have never hidden an idol or any advantage at Tribal because we don’t want players destroying the set. I don’t see that changing. If there was ever anything to be found at Tribal, it would be very obvious to the players.”

With this in mind, we asked Probst to dip into the *Survivor 50 Mystery Box* this week to get his thoughts on Devens recently stashing an idol on the Tribal Council set. What does the Hostmaster General make of the play? Was it indeed allowed, and is the phony baloney idol still there, hidden behind one of the rocks surrounding the Tribal Council fire?

“I mean, that was a really clever idea,” Probst says of the Devens stash. “And we're not gonna stop that idea.”

So does that mean Tribal Council is now fair game for players to poke and prod? “If it reaches a point where somebody is breaking Tribal Council or tearing it down, then obviously [we’d step in],” Probst says. “But Devens and Hubicki had a very clever idea. Nobody has ever thought of doing that. Will it work? Who knows? But the pratfall that Hubicki did, which cleared the way for Devens to just shove it in a crack!”

The host reveals that production did indeed check the fake idol after it was stuffed in there to make sure it was secure, and now they… like us… wait. “All we did when they left was made sure that it was protected," he says. "It was gonna sit there until if and when somebody decides to reach for it.”

What perhaps is most of note in this entire affair is how aware *Survivor 50* players actually are of Probst’s previous comments about how they do not hide idols on the Tribal Council set. Because that could be all the intel they need to deduce that the Devens/Hubicki idol is indeed a fake, since the host has gone on record that they would not do such a thing.

We’ll see how it all plays out. Unless, of course, both Rick and Christian get blindsided along the way and it never comes into play.

Okay, let’s see what else is bursting out of our Survivor 50 Mystery Box this week as we have a fun unaired scene from the original Vatu beach, some hot takes from a *Survivor* fan favorite, and much more!

Look out below!

One of the hidden dangers of *Survivor?* Falling coconuts! While that oft-repeated figure of 150 people dying per year due to falling coconuts has never actually been verified, it’s still something you’d like to avoid if at all possible. It appears Stephenie LaGrossa Kendrick and her fellow members of original Vatu may have avoided a big ouchy when they decided to test out their new shelter on day 2 of the game.

I happened to be there filming when all of a sudden a loud thud could be heard, and debris fell down on top of Steph and others. Good thing they had a stable roof. Check out the moment below.

Tribal Council overtime

Jeff Probst’s job is never done. First, the dude goes and runs a Tribal Council with no notes, no teleprompter, no ear piece — just bouncing around from topic to topic. Then he has to go snuff someone’s torch and watch a *Survivor* dream die. And after all that, he’s *still* not done. At least not when annoying members of the press like yours truly are hanging about. Anyway, I snapped this pic after the first Tribal of* Survivor 50* of the Hostmaster General working overtime.

What the hell, guys?

Honestly, one of the names I was really shocked not to see on *Survivor 50* was Kellie Nalbandian. For one thing, she was the victim of perhaps the most famous blindside of the new era. She also fit the profile of folks they like to bring back — strong, popular players who had an epic exit. Alas, it was not meant to be, but I have no doubt we will see Kellie back on the island at some point. I asked Kellie to be our celebrity Mystery Box guest for this particular episode before the season even began. Little did I know then it would line up to be the week her *Survivor 45* bestie Dee Valladares got the boot. GOOD TIMING ALERT! Anyway, check out Kellie’s take on the episode, on honor and integrity, and her winners and loser of the week.

The last word(s)

An outtake that did not make it into my pre-game interview with Dee:

“You can't let emotional responses dictate your game. It's very hard. And when you put a prize amount in, too. If this was a game and it was free, it would be different. And I think we'd all do it if it was free, just because we love the game. But when you put in that dollar amount, it raises the stakes. You're not just doing this for you. It’s for your family. I mean, it's life-changing money. And I experienced it. It really did change my life. So I know for a fact that the people here that have not won are going to come hard.”

I came *reeeeeaaaallllly* close to using yet another Emily Flippen screenshot this week, this time of her stuffing her face with reward feast food, but just look at this gorgeous shot of the merged tribe leaving for Tribal Council. I don’t care how much color correction they poured into their computer for this scene — it’s absolutely stunning. And a perfect capper for this edition of the *Survivor 50* Mystery Box.
