Barack and Michelle Obama are proud parents of two daughters.

The former president and first lady tied the knot in 1992 and welcomed their kids Malia and Sasha in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Throughout the Obamas' stay in the White House, the nation watched the two girls grow up.

Since the end of Barack's presidency, Malia and Sasha have paved their own paths. Malia, a Harvard University graduate, entered the entertainment industry, writing for Donald Glover's Swarm and screening her short film at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Meanwhile, Sasha graduated from the University of Southern California in 2023 with a degree in sociology.

In November 2022, Michelle spoke to PEOPLE and revealed that her daughters were living together in Los Angeles. "You try not to react too much because it's like, you don't want to go, 'Oh my gosh, I'm so happy for you!' because then they think, 'Well, maybe this is not a good thing if my mom likes it,' " she joked.

Though Malia and Sasha mostly remain out of the public eye, they stepped out in Chicago on June 18, 2026, to support their parents at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center. See their family moments together, below.

Michelle said in 2015 in her commencement address at Tuskegee University, "I love our daughters more than anything in the world ― more than life itself. And while that may not be the first thing that some folks want to hear from an Ivy League-educated lawyer, it is truly who I am. So for me, being mom-in-chief is, and always will be, job number one."

The former FLOTUS recalled the first day her daughters headed to the White House in her remarks at the 2016 Democratic Convention.

"I will never forget that winter morning as I watched our girls, just 7 and 10 years old, pile into those black SUVs with all those big men with guns," she said. "And I saw their little faces pressed up against the window, and the only thing I could think was, 'What have we done?' "

Michelle continued, "See, because at that moment, I realized that our time in the White House would form the foundation for who they would become, and how well we managed this experience could truly make or break them."
