Caroline Jones opens up to PEOPLE about the inspiration behind her new album Good Omen

On the album, Jones wrote about her newfound perspective as a mother to her 2-year-old son Declan

Motherhood changed Caroline Jones' life for the better — and she's ready to share that message with the world.

On Friday, Feb. 13, the country singer released her latest studio album, Good Omen, and it marks a significant chapter in her life: first-time motherhood. Speaking with PEOPLE, Jones, 35, says that the birth of her baby boy in 2023 enriched her "life in every aspect possible."

"This album is a lot more raw, a lot more honest, a lot more empathetic. I tackle some meaty subjects on this album that I haven't had the courage to or the depth to on previous albums," she says. "Becoming a mom unlocks a bunch of gears in your heart and your resilience and your soul."

The album includes 14 tracks total — and each have a personal meaning to Jones. On "Divorce in a Small Town," she explores modern-day divorce and how it impacts families, something she witnessed her friends go through. In the verses, however, she touched on some of her personal fears.

"It's really vulnerable in the verses about a lot of the fears that I had about my career taking a backseat to motherhood and how to navigate motherhood with this kind of career that I've been working towards my entire life," she says candidly.

Now two years into motherhood, Jones has gained a new perspective on what it means to balance both roles — and how confusing it can feel to be in the middle of it.

"Motherhood is a huge investment and choice, and it is a huge responsibility and a weighty one. It's important that we see it like that. And also in the same breath, I think a lot of women of our generation are kind of confused because we have so many more freedoms than any other generation of women has ever had in the history of humanity," the "Storm Chaser" singer says.

She continues, "It can be paralyzing. Like, 'Okay, well what do I do? Do I have a kick ass boss lady career? Do I have a family? Do I try to balance both? Where's my husband?'"

As she worked through those emotions, Jones — who's also a member of Zac Brown Band — realized that it was best to just "tune out a lot of cultural" expectations and decide for herself.

"There's no recipe," she says. "And for me, becoming a mom has really helped put my career in perspective. It used to be more of my identity... Now I look at it much more as like, what can I add? What are my talents? What's bringing me joy? What do I want my son to grow up seeing his mom?"

Jones and her husband Nick Dana welcomed their son Declan in November 2023. Since then, she's experienced "the most intimate meeting of yourself."

"You have to show up in all these ways that you never cared about showing up as much ever before. And I'm a person who cared how I showed up," she explains. "So it just makes you so much more in touch with yourself."

"I feel like there are moments in motherhood where you feel like you're losing yourself a little bit, but I've actually been pleasantly surprised how much more myself I feel now than I ever did before," she concludes.

Following the release of her album, Jones will embark on a 20-date headlining tour, which kicks off on Feb. 17 in Nashville. Tickets are available here.

Good Omen is out now.
