Boy George Vows To Fire Band Members Who Refuse To Perform New Pro-Israel Song

Boy George is standing behind his new song, “We Will Dance Again,” despite a flurry of backlash over its pro-Israel stance and embrace of artificial intelligence.

The 1980s music icon on Sunday posted a short video on Instagram pledging to part ways with any bandmates who declined to perform the song live. He also defended his decision to use AI during the writing process, arguing it removed the “human interference” that could have dissuaded him from recording it.

“The truth is, if I tried to write ‘We Will Dance Again’ with any musician, they would have gotten in my way,” he said. “They would have said, ‘You can’t say that, that’s too controversial. You can’t say this, you can’t say that.’”

He went on to note: “Even now that the song is written, there are people in my band who are questioning whether they will perform it with me, and those people will be fired.”

Boy George released “We Will Dance Again” late last month on his social media platforms. The independent track is not available on streaming music platforms such as Spotify or Apple Music.

The song’s title is a reference to a phrase that’s been used by many Israelis to express hope and solidarity in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip.

“You say genocide, I say war,” Boy George sings. “When you’re attacked, that’s what the army’s for.” Later, in the chorus, he asserts: “There will be no war, but if you’re ever confused ... I stand with the Jews.”

Although Boy George is not Jewish, he described his stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as “a really personal thing” in an interview with The Telegraph published in June, a little more than a month before he released “We Will Dance Again.”

“It doesn’t mean that I don’t have compassion for Palestinians, it doesn’t mean that I agree with what’s going on in Israel, but I am always going to defend the people that I love,” he told the outlet at the time. “I have a lot of Jewish friends, and there would never be a situation where I’d turn my back on them.”

Meanwhile, Boy George’s use of AI in the recording studio is nothing new. Earlier this year, he unveiled a new version of “Karma Chameleon,” which he first recorded in 1983 as a member of the pop-rock band Culture Club, featuring a new vocal track processed through AI to replicate the original sound.

“It has the sound of me at 22 years old with all the experience of everything that I’ve learned,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in June.

Still, “We Will Dance Again” caused a furor immediately upon its release. Just days later, Boy George’s manager Paul Kemsley announced that the singer would no longer appear in a London production of the musical “Jesus Christ Superstar,” in which he’d been slated to portray King Herod.

“George has never been afraid to stand by his personal convictions, and I have always respected him for that,” Kemsley wrote on Instagram. “Equally, I believe it is my responsibility to make decisions that are in the best interests of my artist while also showing respect to others. In this instance, I felt it was right to step aside, allowing the production to remain the focus, while ensuring everyone involved can move forward with mutual respect and goodwill.”

That same week, Boy George announced on X that he’d “parted company” with Tony Pontius, the longtime manager of his independent record label, BGP, who he said wanted “nothing to do” with “We Will Dance Again.”

Since then, Boy George has continued to defend his views on social media.

“There are many people speaking for and protesting for Palestine and attacking jews so why do you get so upset when one voice speaks up for the jews?” he wrote Saturday on X, in response to a user who questioned if he’d spoken with any Palestinians. “When you understand you are just making noise and not helping anyone you might understand. I have my own mind!”
