Barack Obama trolled Donald Trump’s well-documented affinity for gold, which he used in giving the White House’s Oval Office a dramatic makeover. He took the jab while touring the set of the finale episode of Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, where he was seen alongside Larry David in a parody sketch.

While having a look at the set, which was created to resemble the Oval Office during his own 2014 presidency in the BTS video that was shared by HBO on Monday, August 10, 2026, Obama could be seen praising the production team for getting the intricate details accurately.

Barack Obama Takes A Dig At Donald Trump’s Affinity for Gold

The former president said, “Nice job on the recreation.” Looking at one of the props on the table, he said, “You even have the apples.” However, he then took the opportunity to take a dig at his successor.

Obama said, “Although, I do want to point out, there’s no gold sign on the outside that says Oval Office.” The remark also left some crew members laughing. He further joked, “I can’t believe I didn’t think of that.”

The jibe was a reference to Donald Trump’s gold-themed renovations to the Oval Office and some other parts of the White House. According to reports, he had gold cursive lettering installed outside the Oval Office in December 2025.

Trump also installed 24-karat gold leaf trim on ceilings, doorframes and some decorative elements throughout the White House. Ever since the commencement of his second term in office, there has been much scrutiny surrounding his strong likeness for gold when it came to renovating the White House.

Donald Trump’s Fondness for Gold Has Led to Massive Backlash

Many people on the internet reportedly called the renovations “tacky” and bashed the president for “ruining” the original elegance of the historic building during the time of his predecessors.

His granddaughter Kai Trump also confirmed her grandfather’s affinity for gold in her White House tour vlog. According to a news report in the Guardian, Barack Obama had earlier also criticized Trump for focusing on these “beautifications” rather than more pressing issues that have been plaguing the nation.

While speaking at a campaign rally in Virginia last year in November, the former president bashed Trump, saying he is more “focused on ‘critical’ issues like paving over the Rose Garden so folks don’t get mud on their shoes. And gold-plating the Oval Office and building a $300 million ballroom.”

For his part, Trump has also repeatedly taken digs at Barack Obama. This has often left his critics perturbed, with some accusing him of having a bizarre alleged obsession with his predecessor.

In February 2026, the president ignited a huge controversy after the White House shared a parody video depicting the former POTUS and his wife Michelle Obama as apes. The video was slammed as “tone-deaf” and “racist.”

During a later interaction with the press, Trump refused to apologize for the video, saying it was shared by a White House staffer and that he was not entirely aware of it. It was taken down shortly afterward following massive backlash.
