*Love Island USA* was recently hit by tragedy when James Barker, an executive producer on the Peacock spinoff, died at the age of 40 while filming season 8 in Fiji.
The *Love Island* franchise has weathered its fair share of controversies in the decade-plus since it premiered in the U.K. For a reality series that centers on sequestering a group of young, attractive, scantily clad singles in an island villa, some level of scandal is expected. But *Love Island* has perhaps yielded more than most, and they're not always the kinds of scandals that producers hope to see making headlines — for instance, eliminating a contestant for using a racial slur, only to eliminate a different contestant for using a racial slur the following year.
*Love Island* has endured plenty of tragedies as well, and sadly, Barker is the latest in a series of deaths that have shaken the series.

Sophie Gradon was a contestant on the second season of *Love Island*, which aired in 2016. Prior to appearing on the series, Gradon was a model and won the title of Miss Great Britain in 2009. During season 2, she became part of the series' first same-sex coupling when she partnered up with fellow model Katie Salmon.
Gradon died by suicide on June 20, 2019, at the age of 32. According to the BBC, she was found by her boyfriend, 25-year-old Aaron Armstrong, who took his own life 20 days later. Officials told the BBC that Gradon was diagnosed with depression in 2013 and had been taking medication for anxiety at the time of her death. A toxicology report revealed that she had a mixture of alcohol and cocaine in her system.

Semi-professional footballer Mike Thalassitis joined *Love Island* in season 3, entering the villa 10 days after filming began. Thalassitis was dumped from the island on day 44, and went on to appear in the fourth season of British reality show *Celebs Go Dating*, alongside Jonathan Lipnicki, the former child star of *Jerry Maguire* (1996).
On March 16, 2019, it was reported that Thalassitis had died at the age of 26. That June, PEOPLE confirmed that his death had been ruled a suicide. According to the toxicology report, Thalassitis had alcohol, cocaine, and antidepressants in his system at the time of death. His friend and former *Love Island* costar Montana Brown appeared at the coroner's inquest, where she told reporters, "I think it’s important when someone dies in this way that you don’t give up on the memory."

Caroline Flack was an actress and TV presenter who exploded into prominence after winning season 12 of BBC One's *Strictly Come Dancing* and landing two high-profile hosting gigs: *The X Factor* and a revival of *Love Island*, following an unsuccessful version of the series that aired a decade earlier. Flack's hosting prowess has been credited for helping to make the latest iteration a massive, must-see hit.
As recounted in the 2025 Hulu docuseries *Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth*, the host struggled with her mental health and the pressures of fame. Flack had taken a break from hosting *Love Island* after she was arrested in December 2019 and charged with assaulting her partner, Lewis Burton, who did not support her prosecution. She was set to stand trial on March 4, 2020.
Flack died on Feb. 15, 2020, at the age of 40, as confirmed by her family to the BBC. Her death was ruled a suicide just a few days later.
